“A punch in the gut”: TeenSRC chats with ARTHUR SLADE

 

“I’m a teen at heart,” declares Arthur Slade. Naturally, it was a thrill to welcome the author, logging on from his home in Saskatchewan, to a TeenSRC chat that connected teens from across Canada.

 

Slade is immediately at ease in the online atmosphere, greeting users with a cheerful “Howdy” (and later “Yo”) and settling in to an exciting discussion.

 

First, to the interview question he must have heard a thousand times, “What inspires you to write?”, Slade’s quick comeback is, “My mortgage ba-dump.” The “haha”s subside, and he continues, “Really I always loved reading books so I wanted to create my own stories.”

True Confessions: TeenSRC chats with MARTHA BROOKS

 

“This is so cool,” says Martha Brooks as the TeenSRC online chat begins. “Cool” could certainly be the choice word to describe the opportunity to chat with the award-winning author. Brooks started writing in her late twenties, and is going strong at sixty-four.

 

“I just got a lifetime achievement award and it feels as if I’ve only just now learned how to write books,” she comments.

 

It’s clear that for Brooks, lifetime achievements go far beyond her novels. Throughout the chat, she shares her stories: some funny, some serious, all heartfelt accounts of experiences that have shaped her and her writing.

“Someone always asks so I’ll say it: I’m 65; 7 grandkids.” But Ann Walsh shows no sign of slowing down. So far, she has written an impressive “eight novels, one poetry, three anthologies, one picture book. Not as many as some, but I didn’t start till I was 40.”
 

About Her Books

One of the first questions asked is if Walsh has a favourite out of the books she’s written. “Ouch, that’s hard. Does your mom have a favourite kid?” she jokes.

“I have been writing since I was about four. Some composers just hear music. I hear stories.”
 
By the age of eight, Polly Horvath had started writing books. She taught herself to type in the fifth grade and started submitting manuscripts. In high school, she was given a study in the school’s library and encouraged to write. She hasn’t stopped since.
